The bigger question now that Gmail has free phone calls in it is when is somebody gonna figure out how to make it dial all the way through Google without any phone lines? I'm assuming Google hasn't provided a SIP interface yet?

How the hell does politics have anything to do with this blog. Those comments have turned me away from your website and PBXiaF forever. This is not the time or place for your useless, pointless personal feelings on politics you liberal communist but what should we expect from a career state worker. Wait until I get this all over the asterisk community and how you are using your loyal asterisk followers to push a stupid political agenda. You seem to be slipping in your old age and I think you need to start thinking before posting.

Ward:
Thanks. It works fine on 1.6.2. I have another question about the bridge feature on Asterisk 1.6. I read that it can be used instead of Park. Could you let me know, or point me to some references, if there are any advantage using bridge instead of Park and how to do it? Thanks.

Where else in Alaska did you go? It's not really fair to judge the state by Juneau alone.

There have been many efforts over the years to move the state capital from Juneau to somewhere on the highway system, but these efforts have gone nowhere largely because it would kill Juneau.

When Palin was governor, she got a lot of flack within the state for conducting much of the state's business from Anchorage, including holding legislative sessions there, and not requiring some of her government officials to move to Juneau, as previous governors had done.

Though no Palin fan myself, I do think you do her and all Alaska governors a disservice with your comment about the ' “leadership skills” of someone governing ... in a place as isolated and uninhabited as the great state of Alaska." That isolation doesn't mean that the governorship doesn't require leadership skills. Most people don't think of the difficulties that arise in such a state. Scattered population in small bush villages that are inaccessible by road are just as much the responsibility of the governor as the population in the major cities. Overseeing such things as Medicaid is different in a state where the state must not only cover costs of medical care itself, but also transportation and lodging costs, and to even get to a doctor, a patient may spend a whole day (or two) traveling, having to take a snow machine, bush plane, and airliner. The education needs of a small one room schoolhouses in the middle of nowhere must be met just as much as the 100-school district in Anchorage.

But as for the quitting early thing, I'm with you there.

[WM: We visited Juneau, Sitka, and Ketchikan. It looked like all of them would be dead without cruise ships. At least until the cruise ships appeared, statehood appears to have all but killed Ketchikan's major source of income: prostitution. As for leadership skills, you're certainly correct. There is plenty to manage in a place like Alaska. But those problems have very little to do with most of the major issues confronting our country. Palin's divisive comments aside, I'm glad we at least agree that managers who quit when the going gets tough have no place in state government much less national politics. Just my $.02, of course.]

How was your VOIP access on the iPad out and about?

[WM: Where there was WiFi access, VoIP connectivity with the iPad through our PIAF server in Charleston was fine. But there's no 3G service to be found in Juneau, Sitka, or Ketchikan. And AT&T's Edge "service" was next to worthless.]

I'm a long time reader, but don't normally comment. Figured I'd throw in some useful information that is relevant to this article.

I'm a programmer (I previously worked for Fonality), and heavily use Asterisk, Freeswitch, and other platforms in my work.

For source hosting (both open source and closed source), I prefer to use github (http://github.com/).

They provide an unlimited amount of storage, filehosting, statistics, version control (git or svn), issue tracker, wiki, etc., all for free. They also have an awesome website, great community, and automatic approval process. So, unlike sourceforge, you don't have to submit a projcet for approval, you just create a new one instantly.

Anyhow, I'd highly recommend using them if you are looking for a good version control hosting website.

[WM: Thanks for your comments. GitHub is certainly another option although only open source hosting is free. Other hosting plans start at substantially more cost than many commercial web hosting sites. Users might also want to carefully review the GitHub terms of service which grant the site owners unlimited discretion to terminate accounts and delete account contents "for any reason at any time." Not my favorite kind of relationship, but others might be of a different view.]

I have my 7970 working in Trixbox and it seems to work - mostly. I have an issue where if a caller hangs up before I answer the 7970, it still shows that the line is ringing even though the other party is gone. Which means that the line button is flashing amber, and the active call list shows an active call. I can still call out/in on the phone. The strange part is that when the caller disconnects, the handset LED stops flashing red, and the phone stops ringing, but the line button still flashing and the display doesn't clear.

Any ideas?

Just a quick comment. I followed your instructions (several times) before I looked further at the tweet2dial.php file and after some testing found that the line:

require "/root/twitter.lib.php";

Needs to be changed to the path your twitter.lib.php actually is in (obviously I guess). I untar'd the package both as root and without and as you point out, since Mac's don't have a root folder it gets unpacked in the user's directory.

Seems to be working now though. Thank you!

Do you think that a netbook with a 900MHz Dothan Pentium M, 1 gb ram, 8gb flash card(upgradeable), would be good for pbxinaflash? I have on laying around would like to put it to some use.

[WM: Haven't tried that combination. It's worth a try. You'll know if it works. :-) ]

Bria doesn't support multiple profiles/ providers. This is a shame! I would have expected more from the Developers of Xlite.

[WM: CounterPath didn't actually develop X-Lite. They bought it from the actual developer. The only version that they "developed" was the beta which has disappeared thanks to a time-bomb in the code.
Just wondering if I choose the Bronze option, will your Incredible PBX installation procedure for Google Voice will still work?

[WM: Works fine as long as you indicate that it is running Asterisk 1.6.2 so that the extensions_custom.conf setup can be adjusted appropriately.]

Should Google Voice integration work on the Bronze load? It does not work for me, but it works fine on the Silver load.

[WM: Bronze is Asterisk 1.6. If you're using Incredible PBX and chose the Asterisk 1.6 option, you should be fine. If you manually installed Google Voice, then you'll need to change the piping | characters to commas in extensions_custom.conf and restart Asterisk. 64-bit shouldn't matter.]

I ran, update-source, update-scripts & update-fixes and still have FreePBX version 2.5.2.3.

[WM: No reason to run update-source on a new install of PIAF 1.7.5.5. And none of these scripts update FreePBX which can only be upgraded within the FreePBX GUI... also not recommended.
If your willing to work around it's quirks, MagicJack is a great deal. We save $25 a month on our by dropping long distance service. We have our MagicJack connected to a dedicated low-end low power antequated PC that I use terminal services to manage. Three quirks: 1. On cold boot Magicjack doesnt always connect. Unplug for 30 seconds and plugging back always allows us to reconnect. 2. There is a slight delay in transmitting/converting voice to the other end. When first using MJ there's a tendancy to jump on on top of others conversation. This is no proplem once you learn proper phone etiquette and patience. 3. Periodically we are unable to connect to people using small town mom/pop switchboards. No solution here. Just keep trying periodically. All in all, I've got to give MJ a thumbs up as it pays for itself every month. If your call are all IP to IP or to people using the major telecommunication companies you should have few problems.

Clarifying that I am using PIAF now and before was using Trixbox. The backup did not work right on Trixbox. I tried to do a recover and the backup could not see the recent backups. So I switched to PIAF. Now there is a new version 1.7.5.5 and is there an upgrade path from the previous PIAF?

[WM: update-source brings previous versions of PIAF current with CentOS. update-fixes handles any patches and security issues. Very different than the trixbox methodology.]

I'm wondering how to choose between Gold & Silver. Gold implies better than Silver, but in the article you mentioned Silver is more secure than Gold. I'm currently using Zaptel with my OpenVox T1 card.
Is it time to switch to DAHDI?
Why is Silver more secure?

[WM: Gold has an obscure SIP vulnerability, but Silver has DAHDI. So you get to choose your own poison. :-) If you're going to expose SIP to the Internet, you're probably safer with Silver. That doesn't necessarily mean it's as reliable as the Gold version. Time will tell.]

It's tough to keep up with the marketplace.

Apparently the Nexus One is dead.

I compiled an incredible pbx here at home, now I'm looking for a good wifi/cellphone (that is not an iPhone) to take advantage of it. Any new suggestions?

I understand one reason for the iPBX being secure is that it does not open any port behind the hardware firewall. Recently, I tried to install GV and sipgate on raw FreePBX through AsteriskNow. I didn't need to open any port specifically. So did some port had automatically open or it is also secure in that sense?

[WM: We're obviously not in a position to vouch for the security of someone else's distribution. You might want to post this on their forum.]

I would change the 611 and 511 extensions to something else, since much like 911 and 411 (or any x11 number), they are reserved. In many states, traffic information is obtained through 511, and 611 is not only used by wireless carriers, but also many landline and VoIP carriers as well.

[WM: Anyone is free to change the extension numbers to whatever numbers best meet your needs. That's the beauty of open source.]
