Is it possible to setup a VPN if you are on a server like RentPBX which only gives you a public ip? I definitely want to stay away from the logmein VPN per recommendation from the forums.

If security is really important, and you want to roll your own improvements, you might add ssh, sftp, and/or sshfs layers over the groovy pptp 'transport' layer that has been provided here. Lately I am finding sshfs to be a really easy and secure way to mount remote disks locally, and I can't wait to test this stuff out.

One thing to bear in mind is that PPTP is effectively the weakest VPN protocol still in widespread use. Like WEP in the realm of wifi it's relatively easy to crack, or so I'm told.

That said, it's still wide deployed precisely because of it's ease of use and availability across many platforms.

Good locks make good neighbors, even if you house, like mine, has vintage glass in all the windows. You'll never keep absolutely everyone from breaking in, but you can make it less than convenient. So PPTP still has a role to play.
