If you’ve been away from the Raspberry Pi world for bit, welcome to the club. We began with the $35 Raspberry Pi when Ethan Upton was literally making house calls. We got to meet Ethan and his wife when he visited Charleston early on. But WOW have things changed. The Raspberry Pi 5 and the 500 keyboard version are powerhouses. And today we have a special treat for those of you that still have a RasPi 4 or 400 as well as the newer models lying around with at least 4GB of RAM. Incredible PBX 2026 with Debian 13 trixie was introduced back in May. And now that the Raspberry Pi supports the Trixie platform, we are pleased to hop on the bandwagon with a version of Incredible PBX 2026 that offers your choice of Asterisk® 22 or 23 with FreePBX® 17. You still won’t find this combination in the Sangoma offerings so now’s your chance to kick the tires if you have a RasPi 4 or 5 that you can dust off and take for a spin. We recommend you pair the Raspberry Pi with a high-performance 32GB microSD card. To make setup simple, buy yourself one of these $8 devices so that creating the microSD card is a walk in the park on any desktop machine. The good news is the latest Raspberry Pi Imager app now supports Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms to creating the initial Debian 13 RasPi image is simple. Install the app of your choice and then follow these simple steps to create your Debian 13 microSD card for the Raspberry Pi. Boot the Raspberry Pi after inserting the microSD card and create a "nerd" user with a password of "password" when prompted. Next, login as nerd and issue the following commands to reset the root user account which we’ll use to install Incredible PBX 2026: sudo passwd root. Then logout and log back in as the root user with the new password you assigned for the root account. Now edit /etc/ssh/sshd_config, change the following settings as shown below and save the file:
PermitRootLogin yes PasswordAuthentication yes KbdInteractiveAuthentication yes
Finish up your initial Debian 13 setup by disabling the nftables firewall, restarting SSH so you can log in from anywhere on your LAN, removing the "nerd" user account, and running the raspi-config application to setup WiFi credentials in System Options and expand your system to use the entire microSD card in Additional Options. Be sure to write down the IPv4 address of your RasPi after rebooting and issuing the ip command. Then you can login via SSH on any computer on the same WiFi subnet as your RasPi to install Incredible PBX.

We recommend completing the Incredible PBX 2026 from a command prompt on your desktop machine so long as it’s on the same WiFi subnet as your Raspi. The syntax is ssh root@a.b.c.d where a.b.c.d is the IPv4 address you wrote down after issuing the ip command above. Then issue the following commands to kick off the Incredible PBX 2026 install. Begin by choosing whether to install Asterisk 22 or 23. Then go have a cup of coffee and return in about 15 minutes:

You’ll then be prompted to create an admin password for the FreePBX web GUI. And then you’ll be prompted to create the base Postfix email system. Simply accept the defaults, and the install will complete without further intervention. After rebooting at the completion of the install, here are a few housekeeping steps.
1. Change your Time Zone with the provided script: /root/timezone-setup
2. If you wish to change your FreePBX admin password: /root/admin-pw-change
3. If you wish to change your Apache admin password: /root/apache-pw-change
4. To replace SendMail with Postfix: /root/enable-gmail-smarthost-with-postfix
5. If you ever wish to update your root password: passwd
6. If you ever wish to change your WiFi credentials, click here
7. If you wish to add Tailscale VPN support, follow these steps:
