As you might imagine, we spend an inordinate amount of time wrestling with current cellphone offerings to find the best and the least costly options for the Nerd Vittles Fan Club. Today we’ll tackle a new wrinkle that should be especially enticing for those that frequently travel to a variety of locations in the United States with dramatically different cellular connectivity metrics. For example, in many areas of the North Carolina mountains, cell towers of one or two of the three major carriers (AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile) may be non-existent. Then in Florida beach towns, there very likely will be a different mix of the carriers and their relative performance. And then there’s the concern of deprioritization when you attend a major sporting event or concert. So our wish list also included a requirement of prioritized service from at least one of the major carriers.
With the introduction of eSIMs on newer cell phones that support multiple eSIM configurations with at most two active at a time, we decided to build a Google Pixel 10a Android phone with support for all three providers. When you arrive at a new destination, you simply activate the eSIMS of the two best carriers for that locality and then designate which carrier’s eSIM takes priority for each individual cellular task: calling, messaging, and data. Reconfiguration in Android takes less than a minute.

Here’s the mix of providers we have chosen to get all three carriers deployed on the Pixel 10a for just $45 a month. And, for those that are curious, this solution works equally well on the latest iPhones. For Verizon service with unlimited prioritized 5G data, unlimited hotspot, and free international calling to 200+ countries, the hands-down winner is the current Total MAX 5G BYO plan with Auto Pay from Total Wireless for $20 a month including taxes and fees after an initial $30 payment. The plan is good for at least 5 years. That leaves $25 a month to acquire AT&T and T-Mobile service. With U.S. Mobile’s Unlimited Flex offering for $210/year ($17.50/month) coupled with their Multi-Network Add-on for $7.50 a month, that brings AT&T and T-Mobile service eSIMs in at $25 with unlimited talk and text, 10GB of monthly high-speed data, and 5GB of hotspot service. If you use our Referral Code and bring your own number to US Mobile, we both get a $30 debit card to buy your significant other some flowers.
